Tesla Powerwall 3 is suitable for grid-connected homes and businesses, and can no longer be installed in off-grid applications.
Powerwall 3 includes an integrated solar inverter, so best suits people who don’t have any existing solar or batteries. It is possible to add Powerwall to existing solar, but this will make your existing solar inverter redundant. Powerwall 3 is also not ‘backwards compatible’ – meaning it can’t be used to expand existing Powerwall 2 systems. If you would like to expand your existing Powerwall 2, you can still do so by installing another Powerwall 2.
According to Tesla, a new product expected to land in 2025 called Power 3 Expansions can add extra capacity to a Powerwall 3 battery without the need for additional equipment or approvals.
